HK MP5SD Series 9mm Suppressed Submachine Guns

The MP5SD is the integrally suppressed member of the MP5 family, developed by Heckler & Koch for special forces units requiring the lowest possible acoustic and visual signature.

Despite the integrated suppressor element, the weapon retains the same length and general shape as an unsuppressed submachine gun. Unlike most conventional suppressed submachine guns, it fires standard ammunition with the same effect, and subsonic ammunition is not required.

That capability comes from the barrel itself. The MP5SD barrel is drilled with gas ports just forward of the chamber. As the projectile travels down the bore, propellant gas bleeds radially through those ports into the first stage of the suppressor, which surrounds the barrel and functions as an expansion chamber. Dropping pressure behind the bullet keeps it below the speed of sound before it ever reaches the muzzle, so there is no supersonic crack regardless of what the ammunition was loaded to. The second stage occupies the remaining length of the suppressor tube and manages the gas as it exits.

The operating system is HK's roller-delayed blowback, which continues to function reliably at the reduced projectile energy that a ported barrel produces.

The integrated suppressor element also suppresses muzzle flash, making the MP5SD well suited to night operations using image intensification equipment.

Like the standard MP5, the SD is available in a range of trigger group and stock configurations, including fixed stock, collapsible stock, and receiver end cap variants.
