HK MP5 Series 9mm Submachine Guns

The MP5 is the most widely fielded submachine gun series in the world. It operates on HK's roller-delayed blowback principle, the same system perfected on the G3 rifle and still in service on HK weapons deployed globally.

Two rollers delay rearward movement of the bolt head, allowing chamber pressure to drop to safe levels before extraction begins. That produces a smooth recoil impulse and a high degree of controllability under automatic fire, which is the characteristic most often cited by security forces and military users.

The platform is reliable, safe to operate, straightforward to handle, modular, and accurate. Well over 100 variants of the MP5 exist, covering a wide range of tactical requirements across land, maritime, and airborne applications.

Variants within the family

The base MP5 is available across a range of stock and trigger group configurations, including fixed stock, collapsible stock, and receiver end cap versions, paired with different fire control options.

The MP5K shortens the barrel and receiver. The K designation comes from the German kurz, meaning short, and the configuration is intended for close quarters and protective work where overall length is the limiting factor.

The MP5SD integrates a suppressor into the weapon. A ported barrel bleeds propellant gas into an expansion chamber, keeping the projectile subsonic without requiring subsonic ammunition.

The SP5 family is the semi-automatic civilian sporting version, manufactured in the same factory on the same lines.
