The SP5K-PDW is the semi-automatic civilian sporting version of the MP5K, the short close quarters variant of the MP5. The K designation comes from the German kurz, meaning short, and refers to the shortened barrel and receiver.

All SP5 and MP5 models share HK's roller-delayed blowback operating system, originally perfected on the G3 rifle and still in use on HK firearms deployed worldwide.

The SP5K-PDW was designed and manufactured to meet the definition of a civilian pistol. The 5.8 inch barrel has a fluted chamber and a Navy-style threaded tri-lug adaptor, combining a three-lug mount and 1/2x28 threading for suppressor and muzzle device attachment. The magazine release is a paddle at the rear of the magazine well.

Controls follow the MP5 pattern, including a left-side non-reciprocating charging handle. As with HK's legacy designs, the bolt does not lock rearward after the last round is fired.

The receiver is aluminum. The safety is ambidextrous.

Manufactured in Heckler & Koch's factory in Oberndorf, Germany, on the same lines and by the same workforce that produces MP5s, using the same precision-machined components.
