The SP5K-PDW is the semi-automatic civilian sporting version of the MP5K, the short-barreled close quarters variant of the MP5. The K designation comes from the German kurz, meaning short, and refers to the shortened barrel and receiver.

All SP5 and MP5 models share HK's roller-delayed blowback operating system, originally perfected on the G3 rifle and still in use on HK firearms deployed worldwide. The system is known for its accuracy, reliability, and smooth shooting dynamic.

The SP5K-PDW was designed and manufactured to meet the definition of a civilian pistol. It carries a 4.5 inch barrel with a Navy-style threaded tri-lug adaptor, a paddle magazine release, and a fluted chamber.

Manufactured in Heckler & Koch's factory in Oberndorf, Germany, the SP5K-PDW retains many of the critical elements of the MP5 and MP5K, including precision-machined components. Civilian SP5 variants are built in the same factory, on the same lines, and by the same workforce that produces MP5s.
