The barrel is cold hammer forged from cannon grade steel with a polygonal bore profile. No sharp lands and grooves means less surface for fouling, and HK credits the profile with extended service life and a slight increase in muzzle velocity.

The trigger is what the VP9 was built around. Short, light take-up, a single-action-style break, and a short positive reset. HK paired the striker system with a light pull trigger specifically to close the gap between striker-fired and hammer-fired trigger quality.

Grip adjustment is the platform's other defining feature. Three backstraps and three sets of lateral grip panels combine into 27 configurations. The grip angle, front strap contour, and high rear saddle were all set to fit the hand rather than to follow a styling trend, and the frame is finger grooved.

Controls are fully ambidextrous. HK's patented charging supports mount on both sides at the rear of the slide and add leverage for racking. They speed reloads and make the pistol workable for shooters with reduced hand strength, which is a genuine consideration for anyone fitting a duty gun across a mixed roster.

The slide is machined steel with a corrosion-resistant finish, serrated, and cut for an optic. An extended Picatinny MIL-STD-1913 rail is molded into the frame.
