Description

Garmin Montana 760i Handheld GPS with inReach Satellite Communication and 8MP Camera

The Garmin Montana 760i is built for hunters, hikers, off-road travelers, overlanders, outdoor professionals, and backcountry users who want a large touchscreen GPS with dedicated mapping and satellite communication. It combines a glove-friendly 5-inch color display, preloaded TopoActive maps, inReach two-way satellite messaging, interactive SOS, location sharing, an 8-megapixel geotagging camera, long battery life, and rugged construction in one versatile handheld navigator.

Unlike a phone-based navigation setup, the Montana 760i is designed specifically for extended outdoor use. It can operate as a handheld GPS, mount in compatible vehicles, store detailed maps locally, and provide satellite communication beyond cellular coverage when an active inReach subscription is in place.

5-Inch Glove-Friendly Touchscreen

The Montana 760i uses a large 5-inch color touchscreen with a 480 x 800-pixel resolution. The display provides significantly more map area than a conventional handheld GPS, making routes, topographic details, satellite imagery, and navigation information easier to interpret.

The touchscreen is glove-friendly and supports both portrait and landscape orientation, allowing the device to work naturally when carried by hand or installed in a compatible vehicle mount.

Built-In inReach Satellite Communication

Integrated inReach technology allows the Montana 760i to communicate through the Iridium satellite network when cellular service is unavailable. With an active satellite subscription and adequate view of the sky, users can send and receive two-way text messages, share locations, send check-in messages, and access supported satellite communication services.

For users traveling far beyond normal cellular coverage, this provides a separate communication method that does not depend on nearby cell towers.

An active satellite subscription is required for inReach satellite messaging, tracking, weather, and interactive SOS functions.

Interactive SOS

A dedicated SOS function allows users with an active inReach subscription to initiate an interactive emergency response through Garmin Response, Garmin's supported 24/7 emergency assistance coordination service.

Because the system supports two-way communication, additional information about the emergency can be exchanged while assistance is being coordinated.

Location Sharing and Tracking

With an active inReach subscription, the Montana 760i can share location information with family, teammates, or other contacts while traveling.

This can be especially valuable during multi-day hunts, backcountry trips, overland travel, or professional field work where people outside the group may want to follow progress even when cellular service is unavailable.

Garmin Messenger Compatibility

The Montana 760i works with the compatible Garmin Messenger app for supported messaging functions.

Users can take advantage of available cellular, Wi-Fi, or satellite connectivity depending on the environment, helping keep communication within one Garmin ecosystem.

Group Messaging

Compatible Garmin Messenger configurations support group messaging, giving users another option for communicating with multiple contacts during remote travel.

This can be useful for outdoor groups, expedition teams, and families who want to maintain shared communication throughout a trip.

8-Megapixel Camera with Geotagging

The Montana 760i includes a built-in 8-megapixel autofocus camera. Photos are automatically geotagged with location information, allowing users to document locations and later navigate back toward where a photo was taken.

This can be useful for marking hunting locations, trail conditions, campsites, access points, field observations, landmarks, or other locations that are easier to remember visually.

Preloaded TopoActive Maps

The Montana 760i includes preloaded TopoActive maps with detailed terrain and geographic information for outdoor navigation.

TopoActive mapping can display terrain contours, elevations, roads, trails, coastlines, rivers, landmarks, and searchable points of interest directly on the handheld.

Preloaded City Navigator Maps

In addition to outdoor mapping, the U.S. Montana 760i configuration includes City Navigator North America mapping for supported turn-by-turn road navigation.

This gives the Montana 760i added versatility for users who transition between highway travel, vehicle-based exploration, and backcountry navigation during the same trip.

Multicontinent Topographic Mapping

The Montana 760i supports downloadable TopoActive maps from around the world, making it useful for users who travel beyond a single region.

Additional compatible mapping can be downloaded as needed, allowing the device to remain useful for international hiking, overlanding, expeditions, and other outdoor travel.

Satellite Imagery

High-resolution, photo-realistic satellite imagery can be downloaded directly to the Montana 760i over Wi-Fi.

Aerial imagery provides additional visual context for terrain, roads, clearings, vegetation, water features, campsites, and other geographic details that may not be immediately obvious from a conventional topographic map.

Outdoor Maps+ Compatibility

The Montana 760i supports Outdoor Maps+ for users who want access to additional premium map layers and supported outdoor mapping content.

This allows the device's mapping capabilities to be expanded according to the user's activity, region, and navigation requirements.

Turn-by-Turn Navigation

The Montana 760i supports automatic routing for both outdoor activities and motorized vehicle navigation.

Users can follow supported turn-by-turn routes on roads while also maintaining access to traditional handheld navigation tools for routes, tracks, waypoints, and backcountry travel.

Waypoint and Track Navigation

The Montana 760i supports a large navigation database for users who maintain extensive collections of saved locations and tracks.

  • Waypoints / Favorites / Locations: Up to 10,000
  • Routes: Up to 200
  • Track Log: Up to 20,000 points
  • Saved GPX Tracks: Up to 250
  • Saved FIT Activities: Up to 300

TracBack Navigation

TracBack can help guide users back along a previously traveled route, providing a practical option for returning toward a starting point after hiking, hunting, scouting, or exploring unfamiliar terrain.

32 GB Internal Memory

The Montana 760i includes 32 GB of internal memory, doubling the storage capacity of some earlier Montana 700-series models.

This provides additional room for mapping, satellite imagery, saved routes, photographs, and other supported data.

microSD Expansion

A built-in microSD card slot supports compatible cards up to 32 GB, allowing users to expand available storage for supported mapping and data.

ABC Navigation Sensors

The Montana 760i includes built-in navigation sensors that supplement satellite positioning.

  • Barometric Altimeter: Provides elevation information and tracks ascent and descent.
  • Barometer: Monitors changes in atmospheric pressure.
  • 3-Axis Electronic Compass: Provides directional information even when the user is stationary.

Built-In LED Beacon Flashlight

The Montana 760i includes a built-in LED beacon flashlight for additional illumination and signaling capability in the field.

The light provides a convenient backup source for low-light tasks without requiring another device to be carried separately.

MIL-STD-810 Rugged Construction

The Montana 760i is tested to MIL-STD-810 standards for thermal, shock, water, and vibration performance.

This rugged construction makes it appropriate for hiking, hunting, off-road travel, field work, boating, motorcycles, ATVs, and other applications where equipment may be exposed to impacts, vibration, changing temperatures, and weather.

IPX7 Water Rating

The handheld carries an IPX7 water rating, providing protection against incidental immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for as long as 30 minutes under specified test conditions.

This makes the device better suited to rain, river crossings, boating, and wet outdoor environments than typical consumer electronics.

Designed for Vehicle and Handheld Use

The Montana platform can transition from handheld navigation to compatible mounted use in ATVs, motorcycles, cars, RVs, boats, and other vehicles.

For overlanders and outdoor users, this makes the Montana 760i particularly versatile: the same device used for road navigation can be removed from the vehicle and carried on foot.

Compatible vehicle and powered mounts are sold separately.

Garmin Explore Compatibility

The Montana 760i works with the Garmin Explore ecosystem for planning and managing waypoints, routes, tracks, and collections.

Trips can be prepared on a compatible mobile device and synchronized with the handheld, reducing the need to create every route or waypoint directly from the Montana touchscreen.

Long Battery Life

The Montana 760i uses an included high-capacity rechargeable 4350mAh lithium-ion battery pack for extended use away from conventional power.

  • GPS Mode: Up to 24 hours
  • GPS Mode with Message or Location Sent Every 10 Minutes: Up to 24 hours
  • Expedition Mode: Up to approximately 432-440 hours
  • Expedition Mode with Message or Location Sent Every 30 Minutes: Up to approximately 384-400 hours
  • Powered Off: Up to 1 year

Battery estimates assume a full view of the sky and can be significantly affected by tree cover, terrain, satellite communication activity, display use, wireless connectivity, temperature, and other operating conditions.

USB-C Charging and Data

The Montana 760i updates the platform with a high-speed USB-C interface for charging and data transfer.

This provides a more modern connection than the micro-USB interface used on earlier Montana models.
