Description
Smith & Wesson 163064 Model 360PD .357 Magnum/.38 Special +P 1.88" Revolver, CA Compliant
The Smith & Wesson Model 360PD is a five-shot J-Frame revolver built around an unusually light combination of a scandium alloy frame and titanium cylinder while retaining chambering for .357 Magnum and .38 Special +P. That material pairing is the defining mechanical feature of the 360PD: Smith & Wesson reduces the mass of the frame and cylinder without changing the basic double-action/single-action J-Frame operating system.
This California-compliant configuration uses a 1.88-inch black stainless steel barrel, external hammer, HiViz orange fiber-optic front sight, and fixed U-notch rear sight. The result is a compact revolver that retains traditional exposed-hammer operation while using modern lightweight materials and a more visible front sight than the integral blade commonly associated with older J-Frame designs.
Scandium Alloy J-Frame
The frame is constructed from scandium alloy rather than conventional carbon or stainless steel. Smith & Wesson uses this material to reduce frame weight while maintaining the strength required for the revolver's .357 Magnum chambering.
That distinction matters more on a small-frame revolver than on a larger handgun because the frame represents a substantial portion of the gun's overall mass. The 360PD therefore approaches the traditional J-Frame format from a different materials standpoint rather than simply changing barrel length or finish.
Titanium Five-Shot Cylinder
The cylinder is made from titanium alloy and holds five rounds. Titanium reduces cylinder mass compared with a conventional steel component while retaining the strength needed for the revolver's chambering.
Because the cylinder is one of the largest moving components in a revolver, its material is central to the 360PD's lightweight construction rather than a cosmetic specification.
.357 Magnum and .38 Special +P
The Model 360PD is chambered for .357 Magnum and is also compatible with .38 Special +P ammunition. That gives the revolver access to two established revolver cartridges within the same cylinder.
The distinction is significant because the compact J-Frame dimensions remain unchanged even though the revolver is rated for the higher-pressure .357 Magnum cartridge.
1.88-Inch Stainless Steel Barrel
The revolver uses a 1.88-inch black stainless steel barrel. The short barrel keeps the overall configuration compact while the stainless construction provides a steel bore and barrel structure within the otherwise lightweight frame-and-cylinder assembly.
External Hammer
The 360PD uses an exposed hammer, allowing the revolver to be fired in either double-action or manually cocked single-action operation.
This separates it from enclosed-hammer or internal-hammer J-Frame configurations designed primarily around snag-resistant double-action use. The exposed hammer preserves the traditional operating flexibility of Smith & Wesson's Chief's Special-style revolvers.
HiViz Fiber-Optic Front Sight
A HiViz orange fiber-optic front sight is paired with a fixed U-notch rear. The bright front element provides a more visible aiming reference than a plain black front blade, particularly against dark or visually complex backgrounds.
The sighting system remains mechanically simple, with no adjustable rear assembly or separate sight controls added to the compact frame.
Chief's Special AirLite Lineage
The Model 360PD follows the basic J-Frame architecture established by Smith & Wesson's Chief's Special family while applying the company's AirLite material approach. The external hammer, five-shot cylinder, and compact frame preserve that traditional revolver layout; the scandium frame, titanium cylinder, and fiber-optic sight distinguish the modern 360PD configuration.
