The FN SCAR 16S NRCH is the commercial 5.56 NATO member of the SCAR family, built around a short-stroke gas-piston operating system, monolithic aluminum upper receiver, and FN's non-reciprocating charging-handle system. This 98521-2 configuration uses a black finish and a 16.25" cold hammer-forged barrel, retaining the distinctive folding and telescoping stock architecture of the SCAR platform.

Non-Reciprocating Charging Handle

Earlier SCAR rifles used a charging handle connected directly to the reciprocating bolt carrier, causing the handle to move forward and rearward whenever the rifle cycled. The NRCH system separates the charging handle from that movement, so it remains stationary during firing.

FN also designed the NRCH system with charging handles that can be installed on either side of the receiver. This allows the rifle to be set up around shooter preference, optic placement, and other mounted equipment while reducing the possibility of the charging handle contacting the shooter's hand or nearby gear during cycling.

Short-Stroke Gas-Piston Operation

The SCAR 16S uses a short-stroke gas piston rather than the direct-gas operating arrangement commonly found on AR-15 rifles. Propellant gas acts on a piston assembly near the front of the rifle, which transfers energy to the bolt carrier and cycles the action.

The system also incorporates an adjustable gas regulator. The regulator provides different operating settings rather than relying on a permanently fixed gas configuration, an important part of the SCAR platform's operating design.

16.25" Cold Hammer-Forged Barrel

The SCAR 16S uses a 16.25" cold hammer-forged barrel chambered in 5.56 NATO. The barrel is chrome lined and uses a 1:7" twist rate, a common military-oriented twist specification capable of stabilizing the range of projectile weights commonly encountered in 5.56 NATO ammunition.

The barrel assembly is designed as a modular component of the SCAR system rather than being permanently integrated into the upper receiver in the manner of many conventional rifles.

Monolithic Upper Receiver

The SCAR platform was designed around operation from either side of the rifle. The control layout includes ambidextrous elements that allow both right- and left-handed shooters to operate primary functions without substantially changing their firing grip.
