After the firing sequence is initiated with a trigger pull, the hammer is thrust forward by the hammer spring so that it may strike the firing pin, which in turn strikes the cartridge primer. The hammer is only capable of doing so provided it is held under tension by the hammer spring. It is secured inside the lower receiver via the hammer pin.
