The MR556A1 is the commercial carbine derived from the HK416, assembled in the USA from US and German-made components and using many of the same parts and assemblies developed for the military rifle.

Like the HK416, it uses HK's proprietary short-stroke gas piston in place of the direct gas impingement system found on most AR15-pattern rifles. In the closed HK piston system, exhaust gas never enters the receiver, so the action runs cooler and cleaner. The margin widens as conditions deteriorate, which is why the piston system is the platform's defining feature in dust, sand, and mud.

The barrel is cold hammer forged from cannon-grade steel with a 1 in 7 inch twist. It uses a taper-bore configuration with a slightly smaller diameter at the muzzle than at the chamber, which improves accuracy and velocity. HK's production process includes additional steps beyond the forging itself, directed at accuracy and service life.

Chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO and compatible with .223 Remington, with 30-round capacity.
