The stereotypical Russian is hard as steel. Fittingly, this 223 Rem cartridge by Barnaul has a shell casing that is hard as steel as well. That is because it is in fact made of steel, a metal which is thoroughly more cost effective to forge than brass. Steel is non-reloadable and fires a little less clean than conventional brass, but this ammo’s price tag is so significantly lower than the brass cased stuff that we feel it’s a worthwhile trade-off.

Barnaul applies a high tech polymer coating to their steel shell casings. This protective layer not only helps to prevent the formation of rust during storage, but further reduces steel-on-steel friction to deliver more reliable feeding and extraction through a semi-automatic.

This round’s bullet is strengthened with steel, making it more economical and better able to resist deformation, but at the expense of also making it magnetic and thus unacceptable by many indoor ranges. The bullet’s jacket aids smoother feeding from a magazine and promotes a cleaner bore over the course of a shoot. This round’s bullet further includes a boat tail, which effectively makes it more aerodynamic and thus flatter-shooting.
