LUMENS VS. CANDELA - When choosing a SureFire light, consider how much light you need and where you want it concentrated. Lumens are the measurement of the total amount of light emitted by the device. In general, the more light available, the better, especially in deadly force situations. In low light and darkness, self-supplied illumination will often be required to locate and identify potential threats. But, of course, there are times when you may want less light, such as when reading a map, which is why many SureFire products let you select from multiple light levels. Candela is the light intensity unit that quantifies the beam's brightest spot. The brightest (i.e., highest candela value) light is at the beam's center, and it gradually or abruptly diminishes in brightness as it moves out to the far edge of the beam, depending on the optic. Broadly speaking, the candela rating of a light is indicative of how far a light will reach.

SureFire has always been a proponent of having the right tool for the right job. That is why we offer products in a variety of beam patterns to suit your needs. Beam pattern describes how the emitted light is distributed in the beam of a given illumination tool. Throughout this catalog, you'll see products with beam pattern descriptors such as Turbo, MaxVision Beam® and Hybrid. But which one is best for you? Our Turbo Series lights, produce a narrow far-reaching beam generally with higher candela ratings and as such are the best option for illuminating objects at longer distances. For those more concerned with shorter-range applications, our MaxVision Beam lights may be a good choice. MaxVision produces a very wide and even beam pattern that is perfect for a wide field of view, however, it does not illuminate well at distance. Lastly, many SureFire illumination tools utilize a Hybrid beam pattern that provides excellent medium-range hot spot while also delivering ample spill light to the periphery so you can monitor your surroundings. The Hybrid beam pattern is a great all-around choice for general purpose use.
